Litter pickin’

One of the issues that is frequently raised in Bearwood is dealing with ‘grot spots’. Often small areas that have been full of rubbish for so long that people almost take for granted when they go past. The Council can take action against landowners and landlords, but it can be a lengthy process, when what is really needed is half-an-hour litter picking.

Well, Robin Hanny, Chair of the St Mary’s Area Residents and Tenants (S.M.A.R.T.) has got together with Greggs the bakers, the Traders Association, and the 1st Warley Woods Scouts to arrange a litter picking morning to try to deal with some of these ‘grot spot’ areas.

So, this is the opportunity for Bearwood Residents to join in as Team Bearwood and do something about our tidying up our own area.

If you want to nominate an area that needs attention you can do so by using the comments box below, and if, when the date is set you want to join in too, let us know and we can get back to you via your e-mail details.  For those on Facebook, there is a section on The Bearwood Page if you join that group which also allows you to make suggestions.

I’m forever picking up litter outside my house on Anderson Road. Members of the gym dont seem to think twice about throwing their empty drinks bottles onto the ground before they get in their cars. Our recycling bin gets full very quickly. I’ll happily get involved with a litter pick!

The other places that have a lot of litter are on Barclay Road and the section of Galton Road that goes through Lightwoods Park. People seem to park up here and eat their takeaways and then just throw the wrappings out of the cars even though there are bins very near.

Welcome aboard Catherine! Have you spoken to the gym re this issue? Only following on from litter issues and having discussions with Robin and councillors I am going to approach all fast food outlets in Bearwood and ask them to join a responsible retailer scheme with particular reference to litter their customers generate I will speak to the gym if you havent already

Hopefully the new slop buckets will see a reduction in the number of chicken bones strewn all over Warley Woods – a nightmare for dog owners!

I nominate Thimblemill Road, especially by the row of shops opposite the baths and the library. The wind seems to whip all Bearwood’s litter to this corner and the solitary litter bin outside the chippy cannot cope.
